How to find the right ring gear
The flywheel part number is the surest way to match a ring gear. If you don’t have it, these details help:
- Flywheel number. It’s usually stamped or cast on the flywheel, or listed in the parts book or the work order. Look for it in the table above.
- Engine model and year. Some engines use more than one flywheel, like the Aftermarket Detroit Series 60 with its standard and lightweight versions.
- Tooth count and outside diameter. Count the teeth on the old gear and measure across it. With those two numbers we can confirm the match.
Replace the ring gear or the whole flywheel?
The ring gear is the toothed ring on the outside of the flywheel. The starter pinion engages it to crank the engine, and over time the teeth chip or wear, usually in the same spots where the engine stops. A starter that grinds, spins without turning the engine, or catches only some of the time can point to a worn ring gear. If the flywheel face is in good shape, replacing only the ring gear costs much less: the new gear is heated so it expands and is pressed onto the flywheel. If the flywheel is cracked or heat damaged, replace the flywheel instead.
Common questions
Should I replace the starter too?
Check the starter pinion. If its teeth are worn, it will damage the new ring gear, so replace both at the same time.
Do you carry the flywheel too?
Yes. See our flywheels. For the Aftermarket Volvo D13 and Aftermarket Mack MP8, the AK-21514067 flywheel comes with the ring gear.
What if my part number isn’t listed?
Call 1 800 247 7669 with your flywheel number and engine model, and we’ll check if one of our ring gears fits.
Also replacing the housing? See our flywheel housings.
