How to choose the right flywheel housing

Start with the engine model, then check these details on the old housing or in the parts book:

  • Housing size. Most truck housings are SAE #1 or SAE #2, and some smaller engines use SAE #3. The size has to match the transmission or clutch housing it bolts to.
  • Starter position. Each housing puts the starter in a set spot, given as a clock position and side, for example driver side 9 o’clock. It has to match the truck.
  • Material. Most of our housings are aluminum, and some Cummins B, C and ISC/ISL housings come in cast iron.
  • Mounting holes and truck make. Some engines have two versions, like the Detroit Series 60 with 12 mm or 14 mm holes, or the CAT 3406E for Kenworth and Peterbilt or for Freightliner.

If you have the number cast on the old housing or on the work order, call us with it and we’ll match it to the right part.

What a flywheel housing does

The flywheel housing, also called a bell housing, bolts to the back of the engine block and covers the flywheel mounted on the crankshaft. The starter mounts to the housing and engages the flywheel ring gear, and the transmission or clutch housing bolts to its back face. Many housings also have side pads for the rear engine mounts, so the housing helps keep the engine and transmission aligned and secured to the frame. A cracked housing or worn mounting holes can throw off that alignment and cause starter problems.

Common questions

Is a flywheel housing the same as a bell housing?

Many mechanics use both names for the same part, the housing between the engine and the transmission that covers the flywheel.

Do you carry the gasket for the Cummins ISX flywheel housing?

Yes. The AK-3680373 gasket goes with the AK-3680063 ISX flywheel housing.

What if my part number isn’t listed?

Call 1 800 247 7669 with the number you have and the engine model, and we’ll check if one of our housings replaces it.
