Cylinder Heads information

The cylinder head mounts to the top of the cylinder block, aligning with the cylinders to form the combustion chamber. The cylinder head has space for passages that feed air and fuel to the cylinder for combustion and allow for the exhaust gases to escape through the exhaust manifold.

Main components of the Cylinder Head

  • Head Gasket – forms the seal between the cylinder head and cylinder block.
  • Valves – Intake and Exhaust Valves
  • Springs and Seats for the valves
  • Spark Plugs
  • Fuel Injectors
  • Camshaft

The most common failure of cylinder heads is overheating, which can be caused by coolant loss or restricted coolant flow and head gasket failure. In extreme cases of overheating, the cylinder head can crack and would need to be replaced.
